What a spike actually is
A Grand Exchange spike is a fast rise in an item's price relative to its own recent behaviour, not just a high number. 07Flip compares the current instant-buy price against the item's 5-minute and 1-hour averages, and only treats the move as a spike when there is trade volume behind it. Thin-volume jumps are filtered out because a single 50M offer can print a misleading price without anyone actually trading at it.
The four causes, and which ones hold
- Game updates. A new boss, quest or skill rework creates fresh demand for an input or drop. These moves tend to hold for days and often overshoot in the first hour. The game update feed lists each update with the items it touched.
- Supply shocks. A bot ban wave or a nerf to a farming method cuts supply of a raw material. Prices grind higher over days rather than spiking in minutes.
- Merch clans. A group accumulates a low-volume item, hypes it, and sells into the buyers. The spike is sharp, the volume is one-sided, and the retrace is usually complete within a day. 07Flip's merch detection and bot-dump detection exist to catch both halves of this pattern.
- Content creators. A popular video naming an item produces a short demand burst. Volume is real but temporary.
How to trade a spike without being the exit liquidity
- Open the item page and look at the 24-hour and 7-day charts. A spike that started an hour ago on a flat chart is a different trade from one that is the third leg of a week-long rise.
- Check that both instant-buy and instant-sell volume are rising. If only buys are, someone is feeding the move and will sell into it.
- Find the cause. If it is an update, read what changed; if you cannot find a cause, assume manipulation.
- Size the position by the buy limit and the item's hourly volume, not by how much GP you have. The Plan does this automatically.
- Set a sell alert at your target and a mental stop below your entry. Spikes fail fast; the price alerts fire even with the tab closed.

What counts as a price spike in OSRS?
07Flip flags a spike when an item's current buy price sits well above its recent 5-minute and 1-hour averages with real trade volume behind the move. A jump on thin volume is treated as noise or manipulation, not a spike.
Should I buy an item that is spiking?
Usually not at the top. Spikes driven by a game update or a new use for the item can hold; spikes driven by a merch clan dumping into buyers usually retrace within hours. Check volume, the reason for the move, and whether sell offers are still clearing before committing GP.
How do I find spikes early?
Watch the game update feed and the Spikes preset together. 07Flip's news page attaches each OSRS update to the items it affects, and the Spikes preset refreshes every 30 seconds, so the first hour of a move is visible before it reaches Reddit.
