The Official OSRS Podcast Episode 12 With J1mmy
If you can't see the podcast episode embedded above, just click here to watch it or check out the episode on other platforms. We're back with another one of our special episodes while we get Season 2 ready for release, which we’re now delighted to confirm has officially started its recording phase! Last time we sat down with Soup, today it's J1mmy, and we've still got an episode with Odablock coming up! If you haven't checked out the podcast yet, please consider doing so. Discoverability has gotten much worse in a world increasingly led by algorithms, and the more support we get from you before Season 2, the better the chances of our podcast reaching interested eyes and ears. Now, onto today's guest! J1mmy is the creator behind By Release, the long-running OSRS series that turns nostalgia into a full-on adventure, plus the chaotic world of Garry Gilbert and a whole bunch of video essays, music, and side projects. This episode dives into how he found his style, the moment it clicked that content creation could be more than a hobby, and why he still loves digging into the weird corners of Gielinor. What to expect in this episode:
- •From school computers to YouTube: how J1mmy first found RuneScape, the early creators that inspired him to start making videos, and how those influences still show up in his work today.
- •By Release, film school, and a Kansas breakdown: the story of the series taking off, the check engine light moment that turned into an epiphany, and how he approached turning an idea into something people kept coming back for.
- •Creating characters and finding the funny: where Garry Gilbert came from, how text-to-speech and editing became part of the joke, and why roleplay and social chaos are such a perfect fit for Old School.
- •Long-form in 2026: thoughts on streaming, shorts, the attention economy, and why he still wants to make videos you can properly sit with, not just scroll past.
- •Looking ahead: the community features he would love to see improved, plus the kind of temporary game modes and events he gets excited about, including a Leagues-inspired, server-wide castle-capture showdown.
This episode was recorded on 16th January 2026.
We have one more special episode lined up, with Odablock. After that, we're blasting through the recording of Season 2 and hope to have those with you very soon! Thanks again for all of your support, and we can’t wait to hear what you thought of this episode! We've really tried to make something that you can enjoy listening to whether you're playing OSRS, on the commute, school run, or wherever else. We do need your help, however. Please give them a watch and a listen and tell us what you think. We intend to use the feedback we gather from the first season to shape what the future of the podcast could look like.
