As Season 2 of the Official OSRS Podcast continues, we're joined by Mod Other for their first appearance on the podcast! In this episode, we sit down with one of Old School's narrative designers to talk about what it means to write stories for Gielinor, how worldbuilding turns into actual gameplay, and why a good quest is about more than just getting players from one objective to the next. We learn about Mod Other's journey from Junior Game Designer to Junior Narrative Designer, including their work across Varlamore, the Hunter Guild, Hunter Rumours, Death on the Isle, Shadows of Custodia, and the Custodian Stalkers. We also get into the behind-the-scenes process of helping shape Old School's narrative while Mod Ed is busy on Blood Moon Rises, how much agency narrative designers have, and what it feels like to write content that can end up cited on the Wiki forever. There is also plenty of chat about how real-world research feeds into Gielinor, from anthropology and burial practices to why Varlamore's prayer training works the way it does. Mod Other talks about using handwritten notes and very questionable sketches to plan content, designing half the Hunter Guild in a pub, building tools to make dialogue writing smoother, and why interactive storytelling means caring about both the words and the gameplay that surrounds them. We also hear about Other's journey to maxing an Ironman, Hallowed Sepulchre speedrunning, Quest Capes, Diary Capes, pet hunting, going dry for a Bludgeon, wanting full Inquisitor's because it looks cool, and the dream of writing the Old School Fairy Tale finale! This episode was recorded in March 2026.
